Documentary Hypothesis Theory
If you have been thinking that the Rev'd Painter has been neglecting topics of theology and scripture on this blog, hold onto your socks, sit-down, and be careful what you click now! Welcome to hardcore exegesis (interpret out from the text: objective crit.) and eisegesis (the possibly heretical reading into the text: subjective crit.).
Wellhausen, Von Rad, Gunkel, Von Seters, Rendtorff... names common to seminarians and those in the study of the Hebrew Scripture / Old Testament. Now you too may engage in biblical studies by examining the wild world of source criticism.
The "Documentary Hypothesis Theory" posits that the Pentateuch was established not by Moses in one single writing spree, but over many hundreds of centuries by four main groups of tradition; all this to be redacted together by the mid 500's BCE... just after the Exile (Ezra & Neh. times). Here is the King James Bible highlighted with the theory colour coded for J (yahwist), E (elohist), D (deuteronomist), P (priestly). Note that 90% of scholars agree with this theory and most find it does not in anyway diminish the light of the scriptures!
Highlight one of the books and go to a passage of interest and see when it "may" have been written and with which focus.
Now remember in this fun and study, that the Lord 's Holy Spirit, breaths life into his Word and so time is relative, the scripture remains sufficient for salvation. If you wish to explore a biblical reference to support this theory look to 2 Kings 22:8. The text points to a book, a part of Deuteronomy, once lost (think of recent finds in Israel: ie. dead sea scrolls).
Also look at these two different voices in 1 Samuel: one for a king, one against.
Samuel 8:1-22 -- Samuel Warns against kingship: anti-monarchy
9:1-10:16 -- Saul is anointed: pro-monarchy
10:17-27 -- Samuel warns again: anti-monarchy
11:1-15 -- Saul's Victory: pro-monarchy
12:1-25 -- Samuel warns yet again: anti-monarchy
