Fredericton a Sleepy Town a Backward Diocese?
Fredericton is a beautiful city that many speed past to get to larger centers along the Trans-Canada. Many may have been misled that it is just one of the smaller Canadian cities more a insignificant town than anything: WRONG! This is the place to be... apart from Florenceville, other parish villages, and the Coast :-)
Cisco Systems has said this about Fredericton, where it is gaining in notoriety as a technological leader in Canada! Move over Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal... here is a city with a great opportunity of being a major draw. What makes this so great... Free WiFi nearly everywhere, quality of life, and a great Anglican Church network for those youth and young business people who must go from "home" in rural NB "away" to University or Tech work.
The Church should keep in mind the tech modern "way" of communication to the wider world. WiFi is the paper, the Net the ink, and computers the printing press. Could we imagine ministry being effective over WiFi? Would the Apostles have used it? Certainly. Could Fredericton and the diocese be joining in this techno world? I think so. I know so! "DIMS" and the web site is the best in the Canadian Communion, a model for the future. The site and imagination of the Anglican Church in this place is witnessing by understanding the techno-need for communication in this 21st Century world of ours, while continuing to focus on the Lordship of the Saviour of the world, Jesus Christ.
Youth and all around pay attention as ministry, witness and tech are now joined in a great mission. Who knows Fredericton and New Brunswick may just have made a name for themselves in the wider world... not just for oil and wood, and maybe not just for tech now, but for Church.
Why so keen Douglas? Because it made it to Digg.com. And Sherry and I spend our day off in the city. Maybe I should take my laptop. This is a great place to eat; our current fav: Bluedoor... talk about a web-savvy place!!!
