Hello Pastor Painter,

I have another question for you. What are the rules or current thinking around inviting a minister over to your house for supper? You see, up here in Ottawa, it's not done, as far as we know. But we know that in NB, it has been in recent past. Is it a big deal? Do ministers shy from it as "more time" they must spend from their own homes and families? Essentially, we're curious whether it's a polite thing to do (because we really do want to).

I enjoy reading the blog. It's nice to maintain a connection with the church in which I was married. Keep up the good work. And if you're ever in Ottawa, come on over for supper! :)

Interesting question! And thank you for it.

No rules... that's the first thing to know. Each priest plays it by ear. Often being invited for supper is a "big deal" for both priest and the family inviting, more than that, it is a privilege to have the "pastor" in your home. hehe it's a great opportunity to get some quality time with him/her.

I think some priest's shy away from it mainly due to the increased stressors and lack of time that current parish models and family engagements place on the priest's time. I honestly don't think many understand how much time a pastor has. Often time is taken up not by liturgy and prayer, as was the case in the past, it is taken up with administration and meetings, many many meetings. The priest is never just a priest in his own parish but also at the deanery, archdeanery and diocesan level. So the shyness to go out to a meal may be a matter of time management. Never-the-less I think that anyone invited must be honored that someone cares enough to break bread. Jesus loved those times and was often invited, and it was always a time for fun and teaching.

All in all if the minister says no it may be for a number of reasons. In my case often people expect my entire family to come out and that is awkward since my 16 year old isn't interested in "playing family" and my 14 years old is close to that point. And my 10 and 4 year old are... unpredictable LOL. I enjoy being invited out, yet often family times and meetings often prevent me from going out.

If I were you I'd simply ask, when would be the best time for your priest to meet with you for supper... and pin him/her down for a date. And yes, don't be suprized if they cancel at 4:30pm due to some emergency. And that's the last reason why some shy away, emergencies don't happen often but they happen at strange times. It could be a run to the hospital or it could be a crisis where a phone call or home visit is essential.

If I'm in Ottawa, I have no excuses and would be honored to come over :-)
