Douglas is married to Sherry Lockhart and they have three boys, Andrew (15), Cameron (14), and Liam (10), and a toddler, Pippa (4). The family dogs are Guinness, a 3 old native coastal breed, a cross between a cracky and a husky; he distinctively has a brown eye and an ice-blue eye; and a 2 year old Border Collie / German Shepherd mix from local Riverbank.

The Painter's have been married for 17 years and met at McGill during their undergraduate studies. Sherry is originally from Saint John , New Brunswick and worked at McGill in The Montreal Neurological Institute as an administrative assistant to the Neuro-Muscular Research Group. She administered various web pages and did the preliminary work on the Diocese of Quebec site as their webmaster. Sherry has worked on the CAPPE site in the Municipality of Bonne Esperance, building web pages for local business, schools and the municipal. Recently she has been an Administrator for McCain Canada in the Engineering Department.
